The Hoover windtunnel has some attributes. I bought this model primarily for the bags. I am not a fan of the bagless system. There are a few pieces to put together from the box. The instructions were easy to follow. From past reviews I did not bother using the cord handle, I could see how the piece would easily break off. The "Dirt Finder" lights drove me a little crazy in the beginning. The green and red lights were easily ignored after a few uses. The machine is heavy and the diameter of the body of the vacuum is too wide to get under beds and coffee tables. The pet/stair attachment I don't care for. I lift the vacuum when I do the stairs, I have 13 steps. The hose is cumbersome to use because of the way it fits on the back of the unit. I tend to pull and reposition the hose til I get the angle I need.
Overall, the vacuum has good suction and I don't have issues with changing the bag or the cost. I would not recommend this unit to my mother-in-law because she would not be able to tolerate the weight and the heaviness of the machine to push back and forth. I have had the electrolux cannister for the last 15 years but it gets very expensive to repair.

After only a few months of owning the Hoover Savvy 7400, the switch became faulty. It would turn off during use and only stay on if I held the handle at a particular angle while vacuuming (not an easy task). It has now reached the point were it will not stay on at all during use. I bought a Hoover Self-Propelled WindTunnel Bagless with Powered Hand Tool (Model U6637-960) in July 2007. I was reasonably happy with it until the motor burned out last week - just 4 months past the warranty date. I have a two-bedroom apartment; this Hoover received very moderate use. Of course I checked for problems with the roller, belts, and visible clogs. The dirt cup had been recently emptied. The next step would have been to take it to a dealer for repair.
I'm finished with Hoovers. I now have a Bissell Momentum Bagless (Model 82G7-1) that I quite like, so far. It is much lighter weight than the Hoover, and easier to maneuver. One of the features I liked about the Hoover was the powered hand tool attachment. The Bissell has the same type of attachment (TurboBrush). Suction through both the base the attachment hose is very good - better than the Hoover. The dirt cup is separate from the filter (unlike the Hoover) and easier to remove and empty. On the down side, the Bissell's dirt cup is smaller and has to be emptied frequently. I paid [...] for the Hoover (Costco, with coupon). I paid [...] for the Bissell (Kohl's, on sale with coupon).

The on-off switch did not work properly because its internal workings are plastic and do not fit perfectly. If the handle is not tightly connected to the body, the switch does not work. I took this to a dealer repair shop where it would work there but as soon as I brought it home it stopped after a few times. The propeller switch broke. Finally the the beater brush switch stopped working. The reliability and workmanship is terrible. I have had it for about a year and got it as a gift.

I am a big fan of Amazon reviews. This is where I go to research a product, even when I am not BUYING from Amazon. Sadly, this was one time I didn't even think about researching. I just assumed the Windtunnel series was always excellent. I've owned a Hoover Windtunnel since they first came out and have always been very satisfied. When I purchased this model, I fully expected it to be at least the same level of convenience as the past models. Not only is this vacuum LOUD, but it is clunky, the extension hose is a nuisance to get on and off and there is no place onboard the vacuum for the hard floor attachment, which means that I'm either having to stop and grab it, or I'm holding it in my hand if I need to clean a spot that is carpeted. As with every other review, the dirt container is infuriatingly difficult to empty and there IS a lot of fine, dusty sort of dirt collected behind the hepa filter. I don't have another vacuum, so cleaning up after this one is time consuming and just makes me frustrated. Another bad thing about the design of this vacuum is the handle and hose. I could not return this product to the store because while putting it together I accidentally snapped off the small piece of plastic that holds the hose to the machine. Because I don't have this part, the hose is ALWAYS getting in the way of my vacuuming. I've had to extend the handle to it's tallest level just so I'm not walking on the hose! It's also a very difficult vacuum to move around. Have I said that I hate this thing? Hoover has completely lost my business. My husband says I'm stuck with this one until it dies. Thankfully, if the other reviews are accurate, I'll have to shop for another vacuum in about 6 months when the engine quits. Shame on Hoover!

This is the Hoover Commercial Guardsman upright vacuum cleaner. This model is one of the most durable Hoover models ever made. This machine is designed for commercial applications such as hotels, cleaning services, restaurants, office buildings, apartment complexes, and many other commercial applications. The C1431 has a 4 position height adjustment, allowing to easily clean all types of carpets, from Berber, to thick plush carpets, even oriental rugs. The Guardsman C1431 comes with a steel agitator for durability, and has 2 replaceable brush strips, so when the brushes wear down, instead of replacing the entire brush roller, you simply slide the brush strips out, and replace only the brush. I've had this vacuum for about 8 months now and I have to say it's pretty good. We have a dog and 2 cats, so I needed something to handle the hair, and this vacuum really does. (Though I probably should have gotten the bagless version, since we go through bags VERY quickly!) It has a nice long power cord, and a long hose to use with the wand or brushes. I like the power brush for vacuuming my sofa--it really gets the pet hair! I use all the attachments all the time, switching back and forth between the upright and the hose/wand, and it's not much of a hassle. Works great on carpet; see below for my hard floor suggestion. It is a good value for the money, and if you have a Hoover store or service center nearby there's no packing up and shipping if it needs a repair (like with a Dyson).
My main complaint about this vacuum is that the hose is attached to the vacuum too high on the body, so that when you're using the hose, the vacuum constantly tips over. This could be remedied with the hose coming out of the base instead. (Hoover, are you listening??) It is also a little on the heavy side, but I think that sort of comes with the territory....
A few tips:
-I bought a hard floor brush to use with the wand--I like this better than running the upright over my wood floors. It also works better on lightweight rugs.
-If the suction is too strong on your area rugs (you will know because you'll be sweating and the vacuum will start to smoke and/or stink!), take the vacuum back to Hoover. My guy there changed out the beater bar to one with softer brushes and it made a huge difference! I'm not struggling with the vacuum anymore.
-Make sure to tip the handle forward before flipping the switch between carpet & hard floor, and also before turning on and off the self-propel. This will prevent some damage.
-When you pick up the vacuum, do so with the handle provided for that purpose, don't pick it up by the main handle. This will also prevent damage.
Hoping this vacuum stands the test of time better than the ones I've had before it. We'll see!

We are a military family and this vac has moved around the country (in moving trucks, with movers abusing it) and has performed well on all floor types. It's heavy, and sort of cumbersome, but I am so happy with how long it lasted and how long it's done a great job. I have not once wished it picked up dirt better and have often cursed it because it sucked up something that I thought was out of it's range (powerful!) we vacuum with this 2-3 times per week (2 small kids, and cats) on 1500 sq ft of carpet(60%) and linoleum/hardwoods(40%) (this is pretty much the standard base house ratio) I have accidentally sucked up marbles, screws, socks and even a scarf with it's powerful suction in both the tubes and the beater bar. I'm sad I need to buy a new one. four stars because it's heavy and I hate lugging it up the stairs,I wish it had a stairs attachment, and because I hate spending the money on bags!!! it can cost $10 for 2 type Y bags (which this one takes)

The final straw is that they power switch no longer works. I am an intelligent person with an engineering degree, and for the life of me I cannot figure out how to take this thing apart to diagnose the problem.

I've owned this vac for about a year and a half now. It does a good job on carpet, ok on hard floors and the filter is easy to clean. The vac has broken down twice now. Once under warranty a circuit board went out. This was replaced painlessly by the closest hoover vac dealer. Now the transmission drive for the HEPA filter has gone out. I took it apart and was not impressed to find plastic gears driving the filter. Pretty cheap engineering. I talked to the vac place and they say they repair a lot of these. My old hoover lasted 10 yrs with no breakdowns (I still use it in the shop) before I upgraded to what I thought would be a better vac. I should have saved the money.

I've owned this vac for about a year and a half now. It does a good job on carpet, ok on hard floors and the filter is easy to clean. The vac has broken down twice now. Once under warranty a circuit board went out. This was replaced painlessly by the closest hoover vac dealer. Now the transmission drive for the HEPA filter has gone out. I took it apart and was not impressed to find plastic gears driving the filter. Pretty cheap engineering. I talked to the vac place and they say they repair a lot of these. My old hoover lasted 10 yrs with no breakdowns (I still use it in the shop) before I upgraded to what I thought would be a better vac. I should have saved the money.

I purchased this reconditioned in order to save myself a couple of bucks (or a hundred) and so far have used it 3 times. I bought this because my landlord had a much older vintage similar model, and I loved it. I am glad I bought this one; it is extremely effective and the sucking power is incredible, both with it in the vacuuming position and also positioned straight up in order to use the tools. It practically sucks dust bunnies across the room into the crevice tool! Only complaints are it is rather heavy and not easy to store away in my small home, but that was not unexpected.
I would buy it again; I have not emptied the dirt container yet so I haven't run into any problems with that aspect of it, but I know what to expect from prior experience. I feel this was a great deal [...].

This is a great vacuum that pulled all kinds of material out of my carpets. There's nothing really to complain about as far as cleaning performance, particularly in the $100 price range. On the down side, this vacuum requires that the filter be shaken off, and the canister be emptied after nearly every use, which can be a messy process best performed outside by the trash can. I've had bagless upright vacuums like this one before, so this was a familiar necessity, but some users may find it to be a messy nuisance. I appreciate the fact that I don't need to buy vacuum bags that generate additional waste, so the bagless feature is still a big plus for me.
I don't have much use for the hush and boost modes as the machine works quite well without the boost mode, and the hush mode is only a bit quieter. They seemed to be unnecessary to me, but they don't detract from an otherwise great deal on a powerful vacuum.
I initially chose to purchase this vacuum because Consumer Reports ratings indicated that it was the best bargain among vacuums that had the highest ratings for cleaning power. There were certainly other good "value bargain" cleaners for half the price, but this one stood out as a great value for people who wanted a vacuum that was marginally behind the $300-500 competition in performance at a much lower price. The lower price does show in the quality of materials and "fit and finish", and it does have the looks of an inexpensive machine. Personally, I don't care about how it looks since it will spend 99% of its life in a closet, but the highly style conscious user may need to pony up the extra cashfor a more polished design.

The self cleaning HEPA filter motor is built to break after a period of time. I just spent the past two hours cleaning out the entire vacuum and decided to fix the filter as well. The motor for the filter still spins, but the filter does not. The reason it doesn't is because they made the motor-to-filter connector with some strategically placed holes that make the plastic break over time. Once the plastic breaks, it is no longer able to grip the filter to turn it. I am breaking it inwards and filling it with expanding glue to fix this (this should do the trick). I would be surprised if the self-cleaning worked more than a year on this model.
It was also very messy cleaning, and took 25 screws to get it out (which is important if you plan on replacing the filter)

This vaccuum performed more like a $50 vaccuum than a $100 vaccuum. The on/off button is (I think) broken, making it very difficult to turn off. Additionally, the vaccuum is very loud, and while the attachments have a lot of force behind them, the vaccuum itself does not pick up very much on the carpet. Very surprising considering the great reviews other Hoover Windtunnels have received.

I had been searching for a new vacuum for a while when my neighbor let me borrow her Windtunnel. I really liked it, so I did a review search on it. The Windtunnel is the only one that I looked at that had only one bad review. And his problem was the noise it made. This vacuum is WAY more quiet than my old one, so that was not a problem for me! I Love it, it has amazing suction and with the self propel my children can even help me vacuum! Mine was also a remanufactured vacuum so I wasn't sure how it would look, but it looked Brand New! I also bought an extension hose, which several people suggested.I think it is a must, the regular hose isn't very long so you have to pull the vaccum around with you. With the extension I can vacuum my stairs with the base at the bottom, so now there is no more dragging the vacuum down one stair at a time!

I have owner the vacuum since 12/10/2009. It does a great job on the rugs picking up dog hair & with the on off switch for the brush does a good job on bare floors as well. The handle on the short hose is very nice when using the pet hair hand tool. The vacuum is heavy so it needs a longer hose to do stairs. Mine did not come with a bare floor or brush attachment so I am ordering these online. Finding a longer hose has turned into a problem as the company I ordered from sent the wromg hose & now does not want to accept the return. Cleaning the filter is no fun. Now I have two dogs, but vacuum twice a week, but if the filter gets clogged I usually use another vacuum to clear & clean it. After a month of use there is a high pitched whine when I start it. While not a vacuum expert, I believe it could be the belt that drives the brush.

The bang for the buck with this vacuum is excellent. I've used this vacuum throughout my house as well as in my cars. The detachable hose (and the various hose attachments) made quick work of the interior filth in both my cars. Emptying the dust bin takes only seconds. I have tried to use it on my wood floors since there are multiple carpet length settings (one of which is bare floor) and I came to the conclusion that sweeping is just more effective since it's just as quick and you don't have to put up with the noise of the vacuum echoing off the wood floor.
Overall, I recommend this vacuum to anyone who does or doesn't want to spend over $100 on a vacuum.

After being sick of junky vacuums that would either fall apart, overheat all the time, or just fail mechanically in some way, I did tons of research on vacuums and ended up going with this one. The main factors that make it so awesome are the incredible suction power, the manly workman-esque color scheme which matches my tools, the see-through bagless cyclonic chamber, the hepa filter, and of course the rewind power cord.
Pros: Firing it up for the first time, you will see dirt and dust that are inches away getting pulled into it. Right away, you know this thing has great suction and isn't taking any prisoners. This is a seriously powerful vacuum. I learned the hard way not to get it near any small loose wires like phone chargers or shoelaces; it tried to suck up an entire sneaker and I had to shut it down because it wouldn't let go! Later on, I got the hose wand near a box of tissues and it started sucking them out of the box one by one! This thing will try to pick up anything and everything, even its own cord. It rolls well, has ample cord length, lots of attachments and other goodies which clip on, a very clean and easy dumping of the dirt container, and is easy to take apart in case you need to change a filter or something gets stuck and clogs up somewhere.
Cons: Alot of people complain about the belts, and I have to admit that this was an issue for me when I first got it. Not realizing how powerful this vacuum is, having the brush height set too low will grind the spinning brush into a carpet and it will get stuck, stopping the belt in place while the cylinder that rotates it continues to spin. It wears right into the belt and starts smelling like burnt rubber and will trash the belt very quickly. I burned through a belt doing this not knowing that's what was going on. However, this is a positive thing because it shows the vacuum will work full speed until failure, even if it destroys itself in the process, which is admirable.
Half/Half: The build quality on this is very good and is overall solid, although some might argue the body plastic feels cheap and lightweight; I've slammed it around several times and it's taken a beating with no broken parts so far. The weight of this vacuum is average, although I can see how some people might say that it's too heavy for them; this vacuum is a beast afterall and does take some strength to use. There are no bad features about it, however the only issue I have with its form factor is that the top main handle can't be made longer, and this vacuum might be uncomfortable to use by very tall people after a short time. Some people have said this vacuum is loud, but it is average for a vacuum of this size. I personally like the roar this thing lets out because I know it's doing its job with all that power.
As for those who've said they loved this vacuum when they first got it, but it somehow started failing, I guess they don't realize that this isn't a piece of furniture. It's a machine with tons of moving parts and needs to be maintained and taken care of. All of the negative reviews I've read about this vacuum point to user error or abuse of the vacuum; most of the time unaware they are using it improperly.
Overall, this is a great vacuum at a great price. It has all the features you'd want, can take a beating, and eats dirt for breakfast with brute force.

I previously had a Hoover Windtunnel, it lasted two houses and over 9 years and it finally had enough of keeping up with our two children and 4 pets. So I went out to every website I could find with reviews on vacuum cleaners, including Amazon, and looked at everything from the Dyson, Kenmore, Dirt Devil, Hoover, and so many more. I promised myself that after I used my vacuum cleaner for 3 months I would help all those out there like me looking for a good review and let them know about my experience because the reviews were so helpful to me.
So after reading a bunch of reviews I was leaning towards a Dyson or a Kenmore Progressive. Well my friend had a Dirt Devil M140005 Vision Cyclonic 12 Amp Upright Vacuum Cleaner, a Kenmore Progressive Upright Vacuum, and a canister vacuum cleaner (forgot the brand) that she let me test out. Let's just say I hated all three, the Dirt Devil was a joke, the Kenmore was so heavy and a pain to use, the canister was a pain to use and none of them worked well with pet hair.
So then I went to a local store and looked at the Dyson DC 23 Motorhead and really considered paying over $400 for it. But then I looked down the aisle and there not too far down from it stood the Hoover UH70120 WindTunnel and it was only $100 so I decided to give the Hoover a try thinking if I wasn't satisfied I could take it back. I am so happy that I saved $300 and love how well my Hoover works. It sucks up pet hair off the furniture very well, I have hardwoods throughout my house and it picks up fur and dirt off the floor without blowing it around (the suction is great) and I only have 3 complaints but ya know for the price I can live with them. Complaint #1 I wish the powered hand tool stuck on a little bit better to the vacuum cleaner, if I am not careful to put it on correctly it falls off, so I need to be a little more careful, Complaint #2, empting out the canister can be a little bit dirty so I always do it outside and then it's fine, Complaint #3, I love the retractable cord, I just wish it were up a little higher instead of so low, it would just help keep it from going under the vacuum cleaner but, there is a little clip and if you clip the cord to the vacuum cleaner you don't have to worry about it going under the vacuum cleaner so problem solved.
So I say save your money instead of wasting it on a Dyson or a Kenmore for the price this vacuum cleaner is so worth it.
